North motorists warned after hitchhiker robberies on R101

The victims were picked up by people they thought were offering them a lift, only to be robbed at gunpoint and shot.

The Pretoria North SAPS has issued a stern warning to motorists and road users following a disturbing spate of violent robberies targeting hitchhikers along the R101 and Soutpan Road (M35).

The warning comes after a series of incidents in which unsuspecting commuters were robbed and shot by unknown armed men.

According to spokesperson Sergeant Tumisang Moloto, several cases have been reported to police over the past few weeks.

He said in each case, hitchhikers were picked up near the R566 intersection in Rosslyn during peak afternoon hours.

“What began as a routine ride home turned into harrowing ordeals, with victims being robbed of their belongings, and in some cases, shot in the legs by the suspects.

“All incidents occurred separately, but the pattern is alarming. The victims were picked up by people they thought were offering them a lift, only to be robbed at gunpoint and shot,” said Moloto.

Pretoria North police have launched a full-scale investigation and have increased patrols in the affected areas to prevent further attacks.

Station commander Colonel Nonzwakazi Julla confirmed police are deploying officers to improve visibility and deter criminal activity in these crime-prone zones.

She emphasised that motorists should avoid picking up hitchhikers, not only for their safety but also to avoid becoming victims of hijackings or other violent crimes.

“We are urging motorists to be extra cautious. Do not pick up strangers. Some of these suspects pretend to be in need, but they intend to commit serious crimes.

“Our members will be conducting regular patrols along these routes to ensure the safety of the public, but we also ask the community to report any suspicious behaviour immediately.”

Moloto said anyone with information that could assist in identifying the suspects needs to come forward.

Anonymous tip-offs can be made to Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
