Bible study, warm meal help keep children away from streets
Local church desperately needs donations of vegetables and funds to run a soup kitchen from Monday to Friday and during the school holidays.
A church in Mamelodi East keeps school children busy every Thursday with Bible study and helps them with their school work.
Pastor Stephen Kgaswane of Jesus Life Community church in Phase 5 said the programme started in 2023 with an afternoon Soup kitchen, whereby they were feeding 20 children on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Kgaswane said children called their friends, and the number grew to 70, and the church could no longer afford to have a soup kitchen twice a week due to insufficient funds.
“The church members donated money from their own pockets, but the funds are not enough to feed over 70 children,” said Kgaswane.
Therefore, the soup kitchen was forced to operate once a week on Thursdays.
Kgaswane said the church desperately needs funds or donations of vegetables to run the soup kitchen from Monday to Friday and during the school holidays.
The soup kitchen helps keep children away from the streets, drugs and crime,” he said.
“The church member volunteers cook for the children, and we also have two volunteers who are helping children with their schoolwork.”
He said the soup kitchen is not about feeding hungry children, but has helped improve their schoolwork.
The church also provides less fortunate children with donations of clothes.
He urged the community members, donors and volunteers to come on board and help with anything to keep the soup kitchen running.
Other activities that the church keeps children busy with are different sports activities.
