Latest crime stats paints complex picture for Centurion communities

The quarterly crime statistics have revealed progress and persistent challenges in Centurion, with most contact crimes decreased while sexual offences have gone up.

Crime trends across Centurion have shifted noticeably in the fourth quarter of the 2024/25 financial year.

This is according to statistics released by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on Friday, May 23.

The data, covering January to March and compared against the past five years, highlight both progress in curbing certain crimes and areas where challenges remain.

In the Wierdaburg policing area, contact crimes dropped by 14.5%, equating to 10 fewer cases.

Murder incidents decreased slightly, with two cases reported compared to three previously, and robbery with aggravating circumstances fell by 11.2%.

Common robberies also saw a drop, with 28 incidents recorded.

However, sexual offences climbed, with 13 cases reported – two more than the previous period, including 10 rape cases.

Property-related crimes showed improvement with a 21.9% reduction, amounting to 92 fewer cases.

On the other hand, carjackings increased by eight, while truck hijackings dropped slightly.

Theft of motor vehicles also declined, but drug-related offences rose marginally, with 19 cases this quarter compared to 17 previously.

Erasmia experienced an increase in contact crimes during the quarter.

Although figures for sexual assault and attempted sexual offences remained unchanged from the previous year, the lack of improvement indicates a need for more targeted intervention and support strategies in this precinct.

Laudium reported a 21.9% rise in contact crimes.

However, there was a slight positive shift in common robbery cases, which decreased from six previously to two.

Property-related crimes also improved, dropping from 36 cases to 28, reflecting some success in curbing theft in the area.

The Lyttelton police station reported a 23.6% decrease in contact crimes.

A significant contributor to this drop was the decline in robbery with aggravating circumstances, which fell by 49 cases.

However, common assault showed a slight increase of 6.6%.

Property-related crimes also saw a notable decrease of 14.2%, with residential burglaries falling by an impressive 23.9%.

There were also positive developments in curbing theft, with reductions in motor vehicle, motorcycle, and stock theft.

Despite these improvements, concerns remain.

Sexual offences, which previously had no reported cases, rose to one incident, and commercial crimes increased by 15.8%, reaching 411 cases.

Rape cases dropped marginally, with one fewer case than the previous count of four.

Police-detected crimes in Lyttelton rose by 43.8%, suggesting intensified enforcement and patrol efforts.

In Olievenhoutbosch, the statistics presented a mixed picture. While crimes detected through police action declined by 19.4%, contact crimes also fell by the same margin.

Robbery with aggravating circumstances dropped by 21.2%, with 35 fewer incidents recorded.

However, not all categories showed improvement. Assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm rose by 15.9%, increasing from 69 to 80 cases.

Common assault, in contrast, decreased by 22.9%. Rape cases also declined, falling to 15 from the previous count of 20.

Carjackings rose slightly by one incident, reaching 51, while robberies at residential premises fell by one case.

On the negative side, burglaries at non-residential premises rose by 12 cases, and theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles increased by two, bringing the total to 40.

Theft out of vehicles showed a reduction of 14.1%.
