North stations record drop in contact crimes

Police stations in the north of Pretoria have shown decreases in contact crimes in the latest quarterly crime stats released by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on May 23.

The statistics indicate the number of crimes reported to the country’s 1 163 police stations from January to March.

Contact crimes, which include offences like murder, sexual assault, and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), saw notable shifts in the north.

Pretoria North

A decrease of 10.1% has been reported in contact crimes.

Robberies with aggravating circumstances and assault cases decreased by 10 counts, from 67 to 57 cases and from 81 to 71, respectively.

Assault with intent to cause GBH cases and rape cases increased by two counts.

One count of sexual assault was recorded, compared to the three reported in the previous quarter.

Carjackings decreased by one count to seven cases, and robberies at non-residential premises decreased by five counts to only seven.

Robberies at residential premises increased by two to seven.

No cases of arson were reported, and with malicious damage to property cases, 49 were reported, a 7-count decrease from the previous quarter.

Burglary at non-residential premises decreased by three counts of down to 13 cases, and at residential properties, decreased by 12 cases.

Motor vehicle and motorcycle theft cases decreased by one count.

Detected illegal firearm and ammunition possession crimes decreased by two counts from four, and 27 more counts of driving under the influence (DUI) were recorded from the 64 in the last quarter.

Akasia

The Akasia SAPS reported a 9.2% decrease in contact crimes, with 27 attempted murder cases reported.

Assault with intent to cause GBH decreased by 21.5% (144 cases to 113), and cases of common assault decreased by 10.6% (189 to 169). Common robberies increased by two counts (now 48) and murder cases decreased by four counts (now 14) while sexual offences decreased by 15 (now 25).

Cases of robbery with aggravating circumstances decreased by one, from 194 cases down to 193.

This quarter, 18 rapes were reported.

Carjackings increased by 23 counts, up to 58 reported cases and robberies at non-residential premises decreased by two counts to 13 cases.

Sinoville

Contact crimes (crimes against people) saw a decrease of 29.7% this quarter.

Murder counts remained the same, with one case being reported, and sexual offences decreased by three counts, as five cases were reported.

A total of 12 cases of assault GBH cases were reported, and common assault cases decreased by 18.8% (from 64 to 52).

Common robberies decreased by five counts, with 13 cases reported this quarter and robberies with aggravating circumstances increased by 14 counts.

Two rape cases and two cases of sexual offences were reported.

Carjackings increased by two counts from two cases to four, and nine robberies at residential premises took place, while five robberies at non-residential premises were recorded.

Malicious damage to property cases increased by one count (from 35 to 36).

A total of 20 cases of burglary at non-residential premises were recorded, and there was a decrease of 1.4% at residential premises, with 74 cases.

Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle cases decreased by 36.5%, with 80 cases reported during October to December 2024.

Police detected two cases of illegal firearms and ammunition, compared to the four in the last quarter.
