Mamelodi youth punches back at crime through boxing

Young fighters in Mamelodi rise above crime and drugs through sport.

In celebration of Youth Day, Mabetha Boxing Club in Mamelodi hosted a boxing club tournament under the theme “Stronger Together”.

The event was held at the clubhouse in Mamelodi East, Section 14, from 10:00 till late.

Santy Mathole from the club said this initiative was centred on youth empowerment, community building, and creating a safe, positive environment for young people through sport and mentorship.

Mathole said the day began with a 5km community walk followed by yoga stretching aimed at promoting health, unity, and visibility for our cause.

“Over 40 young participants took part in the walk, bringing energy and enthusiasm that set the tone for the rest of the day,” said Mathole.

“Our club boxing tournament featured 15 exciting bouts, including one female match for the under-12 division, which showcased the talent, discipline, and spirit of our young athletes.”

The event created a space for the youth to shine, stay active, and feel seen and supported.

“We were joined by a professional photographer and videographer, who generously offered their time and skills to capture the essence of the day: the energy, camaraderie, and passion of everyone involved,” he said.

Local businessmen sponsored the tournament with meals for the children.

Mathole added that the tournament was about reviving boxing in Mamelodi and raising awareness of drug abuse, and keeping children busy and away from the streets.

The children participants celebrated Youth Day by participating in the boxing tournament.

Youth aged between seven and 24 years old could participate. The winners were awarded medals and certificates.

He also encouraged children from Mamelodi, especially girls, to participate in different sporting codes.

“We have a lot of talent in Mamelodi, and some of these talents include boxing.”

Mathole said many are not aware that they have their very own boxing club in Mamelodi.

“The drive is to get as many kids off the streets and allow them access to physical training. We want to reduce the use of drugs and eliminate crime among the youth.”

The club is in desperate need of sponsors for training equipment and the next tournament on Nelson Mandela Day (July 18).
