From gospel beats to steamy treats – Eersterust comes alive
The community came together for a weekend of uplifting events: from song and theatre to a potjiekos cook-off to a spirited gospel extravaganza, it was a powerful reminder of the unity and hope that lives in Eersterust.
Eersterust was all about empowerment, fun and music this past weekend, with back-to-back events that brought the community together.
According to a resident, Sheryl Mudly, the events shone a bright light on the community and demonstrated that the people of Eersterust are capable of uniting for positive reasons.
She said the weekend started with a mood of melodies, as the Eersterust Ministers’ Fraternal hosted a gospel youth bash that brought together learners who were away on the second term school holidays.
“The programme was filled with items that got the youth dancing and singing. A teen challenge presented a play that expressed the reality of substance abuse,” she said.
She said that the Eersterust youth showed up in large numbers, and the evening was concluded with a hot cup of soup and vetkoek.
Mudly added that Pastor Jade emphasised the vital need to empower young people in ways that relate to their interests.
“We need to provide programmes that are empowering for our youth in an exciting way, and this was our way of doing it,” said Jade.
The Uniting Reform Church of South Africa (URCSA) hosted a potjiekos competition for all the wards in Eersterust.
She said that with 11 competitors’ pots cooking up a storm, the vibrant atmosphere, and the variety of aromas filling the air, the event was a sight to be seen.
“The judges were impressed with the effort that every team put in, and the tasting of the food was on another level. The professionalism in the committee led by Alvino Prins was admirable,” she said.
The judges were representatives from various local organisations.
The senior pastor of URCSA, Reverend Angelique Ghall, congratulated the winner, Ward N8-N9 WXYZ. “The competition was a success and I am grateful to everyone who participated. The judging was unbiased and the community had fun.”
Mudly said to end the weekend, the Christian Assemblies hosted a gospel winter extravaganza that featured artists from different parts of South Africa.
“Jessie Loitering, the main artist, ended the extravaganza with a few nostalgic songs.”
She said the performance line-up catered for both young and old, and it was a night that no one wanted to end.
“The event was a blessing and the talent and the passion for the gospel left a lasting impact,” said one of the church leaders, Pastor Harry.
Mudly believes that with events that have a positive impact on the community, there is hope for the future of Eersterust.
