Born to Bojwa: Young Mams dancers shake up streets
Instead of leading a life of crime, these young dancers choose to focus on a brighter future.
A dance group from Phase 3 in Mamelodi is keeping children away from the streets with its unique style of dancing.
International Dlala Dancers was founded in 2023 by Mahlatsi Baloi and is known in the community through their unique dancing, dubbed ‘Bojwa’ dance. It is a freestyle dance style and is known for its energetic and creative movements.
Mahlatsi said the dance keeps audiences on their feet and entertained.
He said the group performs at local events, social club gatherings and weddings.
The dance group is all about sharing talent, learning from each other, but most importantly, keeping Mamelodi children away from the streets, crime and drugs.
Mahlatsi said the group is not about dancing only. “We also do drama and comedy.”
There are 12 members: boys and girls from the age of 12 upwards.
He said there is a lot of talent in Mamelodi. “But it’s sad to see that talent go to waste because of drugs, substance abuse, teenage pregnancy and crime.
“Our group is focused on the development of dance, building a dance academy for our community and training dancers for the profession.
“Most importantly, to build confidence within themselves, especially young children, because we want to teach them when they are still small.”
Mahlatsi said their main goal is to perform internationally, sharing stages with big dance groups.
The group practises at House 30128, Boshielo Street in Mamelodi East, Phase 3.
