Appeal for volunteers keep tails wagging at shelter
Furry friends still feel the love despite fewer hands at shelter
The Pretoria Dog Rescue shelter was still buzzing with wagging tails and happy barks on Saturday, even though there were fewer volunteers than usual to help out.
The shelter, which relies on volunteers every Saturday to clean kennels, feed, play and walk the dogs, saw its loyal regulars stepping in to make sure the furry residents got all the care and attention they needed.
Long-time volunteer duo Jaydine van Zyl and her father, Riaan van Zyl, said they have been giving their time to the shelter for over five years.
“We just love dogs,” Jaydine said. “At home, we also have one of our own, so it feels natural to help others who need it.”
Another volunteer, Atheeya Naidoo, said her journey with the shelter began when a friend invited her along one Saturday.
“I fell in love with the place and the dogs. Now I even invite my friends to join in.”
Despite the smaller turnout, the dogs enjoyed walks, playtime, and cuddles from the dedicated volunteers.
The shelter encourages more community members to come and spend a few hours on Saturdays to help care for their four-legged residents.
“It doesn’t take much to make a big difference,” said Van Zyl.
