Silverton residents frustrated by week-long water leak near Pretoria Road and Simon Vermoten
A persistent water leak near Pretoria Road in Silverton has left residents frustrated due to the delay in it being repaired.
Residents in Silverton have raised serious concerns over a water leak at the intersection of Simon Vermooten and Pretoria Road near the Engen garage on the way to the Ford Motor Company.
The leak, which has been flowing continuously since July 24, remains unrepaired, prompting frustration from the community.
Some residents initially believed the issue to be a sewage leak due to being near a manhole, and warned that if left unattended, it could pose a significant health risk.
The residents said that despite multiple escalations of the issue to the metro, it is still being left unattended.
Metro spokesperson, Selby Bokaba, confirmed that the matter was reported to the metro on July 27.
“A municipal team was dispatched on July 29 to assess the situation,” Bokaba explained.
He said the investigation revealed the issue to be a water leak rather than a sewage spill.
“The matter has since been escalated to the water distribution team and is scheduled for repair on Wednesday, July 31, as the team is currently attending to service requests lodged prior to this incident,” Bokaba said.
In response to broader concerns about sewage and service delivery in Region 6, Bokaba said that sewer-related issues are treated with urgency due to the public health risks they pose.
“The city aims to resolve sewer blockages within a 48-hour turnaround time.”
It is reported that there are currently 131 outstanding sewer blockages in Region 6.
Bokaba acknowledged that financial and staffing constraints have affected response times, but emphasised that municipal teams continue to prioritise high-risk areas.
“A dedicated team has been assigned to Silverton to address local sewer blockages more efficiently.”
Bokaba noted that the backlog has improved significantly, with the number of unresolved cases dropping from 456 to 131.
“Residents are urged to continue reporting service-related issues via the city’s official channels to ensure timely interventions.”
