Licensing centre hours extended this week to ease long queues

Long queues at Tshwane licensing centres have prompted the metro to extend operating hours this week to assist in clearing festive-season backlogs.

The metro has extended operating hours at all municipal licensing centres in an effort to reduce long queues and clear service backlogs experienced during December 2025.

The city said the festive season placed significant pressure on licensing centres due to increased demand for services such as motor vehicle licence renewals, driver’s licence renewals, roadworthy testing and applications for temporary licences.

To address the situation, the Tshwane metro has introduced extended operating hours as a targeted intervention to improve service delivery and assist residents who were unable to access services during peak periods.

Following an assessment of operational capacity, all municipal licensing centres will operate from 08:00–18:00 from January 5–9.

Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the measure is aimed at easing congestion and improving turnaround times for customers.

“We experienced unusually high volumes at our licensing centres during the festive period, which led to long queues and backlogs,” Mashigo said.

“By extending operating hours, we aim to improve access to licensing services, reduce waiting times and ensure that residents are assisted as efficiently as possible.”

He urged residents to take advantage of the extended hours and to plan their visits where possible to avoid unnecessary delays.
