Murder suspect arrested during law enforcement operation
Law enforcement agencies in Tshwane intensified crime combatting efforts over the weekend, resulting in the arrest of 325 suspects during Operation Shanela.
Police in the Tshwane metro arrested a murder suspect as part of Operation Shanela, conducted on March 14–15 in Pretoria North and Akasia.
The operation was spearheaded by Tshwane district commissioner Major-General Samuel Thine.
It included integrated resources from SAPS, the TMPD, the Department of Home Affairs and local CPFs.
According to Tshwane police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk, the operation led to the arrest of 325 suspects for various crimes.
“Detectives executed the first phase of the operation on the evening of March 15, arresting 241 suspects, including one suspect for murder, attempted murder (5), armed robbery (6), rape (11) and 78 suspects for gender-based violence-related offences,” said Van Dyk.
The second phase was conducted on Saturday evening by uniformed members to enhance visible policing and public safety while ensuring legislative compliance.

Van Dyk said three teams were deployed and conducted a roadblock, stop-and-search actions and targeted patrols in identified areas.
“A total of 469 individuals and 252 vehicles were searched during the operation. Twenty-six motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, while 14 AARTO infringement notices amounting to R9 750 were issued,” he added.
In addition, 43 undocumented foreign nationals were detained and handed over to immigration authorities for processing and deportation.
The operation also targeted the illegal sale and consumption of alcohol. A total of 14 liquor outlets were inspected, of which two establishments were closed and fined for non-compliance, and alcohol was confiscated.

Van Dyk added that 12 individuals were fined for drinking in public.
Twenty-one patrols were conducted in identified hotspots, which led to the arrest of two suspects for drug dealing after they were found in possession of illegal drugs.
According to Van Dyk, one suspect was also arrested and charged for contravening the Medicines Act after being found in possession of unauthorised tablets.
