Soshanguve residents frustrated by unresolved sewage issue

The blockage is caused by foreign objects thrown into and clogging the sewer pipe, according to the metro. The city promised to look into it.

The Tshwane metro will attend to a blockage that has strained pipe systems and led to sewage overflow in Soshanguve, Block L.

Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the city was aware of the issue and promised action.

“The blockage is caused by foreign object ingress, including sand, stones, and cloths into the sewer line. The technical team also identified a minor defect on the outlet of the sewer manhole channel that may also be contributing to the recurrence of sewer blockages in the area,” he said.

Mashigo assured residents that the defect will be attended to as soon as the required tools, like drain bladder tubes, are available.

“The city would like to plead with the members of the community to refrain from disposing of foreign objects into the sewer system or from connecting gully water traps into the sewer system. Such acts overload the infrastructure and cause extended blockages,” he added.

A procurement process is currently underway.

The plan to address the sewage overflow follows, as a resident of Block L raised concerns over serious health concerns that were allegedly creating distress for a family with an 11-month-old baby.

The family has since adopted a daily routine of leaving their home with the baby for at least three hours a day in an effort to limit exposure to the contaminated environment.

“The smell gets really unbearable when we haven’t been in the house and we left the windows closed. The sewage gas flares up through the bathroom pipes,” said Mpho Baloyi.

Other community members have also raised concerns, pleading for urgent intervention from the metro.
