Swift action from Brinant Security and community vigilance led to the arrest of a cable theft suspect at Sysie Street in Silverton at around midnight on March 17.
A resident reported suspicious activity to the private security company after hearing a loud noise. The company dispatched officers who arrived at the scene after about 10 minutes, where they detained the suspect on-site.
Collaborating with residents, the officers managed to locate and apprehend the suspect, who was allegedly involved in the power cable theft.
The suspect was then handed over to Silverton SAPS for further investigation.
In a social media post on Facebook, the company expressed its gratitude to the community for their quick reporting and co-operation. They emphasised the importance of co-ordinated action in keeping neighbourhoods safe.
“The community in this incident was extremely vigilant; they provided us with all the correct and relevant information regarding the suspect,” said Ancelize van der Kooi, a representative of Brinant Security.

Van der Kooi mentioned that cable theft cases have become a growing concern across Pretoria.
Cable thieves typically target copper cables due to their high resale value, according to industry reports. Common locations where such incidents occur include areas with no streetlights, substations, manholes and poorly secured infrastructure.
According to Van der Kooi, suspects usually operate during the early hours of the morning after scouting areas to identify vulnerable infrastructure.
They may operate in groups or individually, using tools such as bolt cutters, hacksaws or powered cutting tools. In some cases, suspects attempt to cut live electrical cables, which is extremely dangerous.
As a result, cable theft can lead to power outages, damage to infrastructure, and the risk of serious injury or death.
It affects both residents and the individuals involved. The motivation behind such crimes is often linked to the resale of copper and other metals to illegal scrap metal markets.

When speaking to Rekord, Van der Kooi highlighted signs that residents can look out for to prevent similar incidents.
She urged residents to watch out for individuals tampering with manholes, cables or electrical cabinets, and to be cautious of people loitering around power boxes, substations and streetlight poles.
“Your safety remains our top priority. We would like to urge all community members to stay vigilant and proactive in helping prevent crime in our area,” she said.
She advised residents not to approach or confront suspects if they notice any suspicious activity related to cable theft. Instead, they should take note of descriptive details such as vehicles, clothing, location and time, and report it immediately to their nearest police station or to a private security company.
“Timely reporting can prevent incidents and protect essential services in our community,” she said.
Police have been approached for comment regarding the incident, including details on the suspect and potential charges. Their response will be included once received.
