Heavy rainfall cause temporary shutdown at Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Plant
Heavy rainfall has caused high turbidity in raw water, forcing a temporary shutdown of the Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Plant. Residents are advised to expect disruptions while emergency water supply continues.
Tshwane temporarily shut down the Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Plant on March 19, due to deteriorating raw water quality caused by recent heavy rainfall.
The metro said high sediment levels in the water have made it impossible for the plant to process water to the standards needed for safe human consumption.
Spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the situation is being closely monitored.
“The plant is not designed to treat murky water. Full production will resume once the raw water quality improves to acceptable levels for treatment,” Mashigo explained.
The shutdown of the plant has affected Bronkhorstspruit Town, Bronkhorstspruit suburbs, Zithobeni, Rethabiseng, Ekandustria, Ekangala, and the Thembisile Hani Local Municipality.
Mashigo said the city apologises for the inconvenience caused by the interruption, and that water tankers have been deployed to provide water to the affected communities.
He urged residents to report water supply interruptions, burst pipes, leaking meters, or blocked street sewers by calling 012 358 9999 or 080 1111 556.
Mashigo emphasised the importance of community co-operation during the disruption, saying, “We appreciate residents’ patience while we work to restore safe water supply as quickly as possible. Our teams are actively monitoring water quality and will resume full operations as soon as conditions allow.”
