Help get animal shelter's rescue bakkie back on the road

After already paying thousands for repairs, the small shelter now faces new wiring problems that have left its only rescue vehicle unable to start.

The Delmas Animal Shelter is appealing to the public for assistance after its only rescue bakkie broke down again, making it difficult for the team to respond to animals in need.

The shelter, which assists hundreds of animals every year, relies heavily on the vehicle to collect injured animals, transport them to veterinary care and respond to emergency calls.

Heidie Pollard from Pretoria East Animal Rescue said the shelter has already received some support from donors, but more help is urgently needed to get the vehicle fully operational again.

“We at Delmas Animal Shelter want to thank the people that did donate towards the cost of the bakkie,” said Pollard.

“The shelter bakkie is still broken. It is an old bakkie, and Faith Workshop did come and change the head of the bakkie, but the bakkie now has wiring problems and does not want to start.”

Pollard said the vehicle is essential for the shelter’s daily rescue work.

Shelter owner Jolandie Verwey said the breakdown comes at a particularly difficult time for the shelter and her family.

“The bakkie broke down when my husband passed away seven months ago. He used to be the one who usually fixes the bakkie. Now it’s just my daughter and me at the animal shelter,” said Verwey.

She explained that the shelter had already paid for major repairs earlier this year.

Verwey said they got a mechanic to fix the head gasket, but now there’s a problem with the wiring, and the bakkie won’t start.

She added that the shelter’s funds are running low and appealed to anyone who might be able to assist.

“We would appreciate it if someone could fix the bakkie for us. Our funds are low. Alternatively, a better bakkie for the shelter would be great.”

Despite the challenges, the shelter continues its work caring for animals in need.

“We are a registered non-profit animal shelter helping about 300 animals a year, including 160 dogs and 26 cats.”

“We want to thank you for your support for the animals at Delmas Animal Shelter.”

Residents who would like to assist the shelter can contact Delmas Animal Shelter on 060 613 1048 or 076 808 6684.
