Sergeant found with R50 000, case dockets and explosive in north home, remains behind bars
The Anti-Gang Unit acted on a tip-off and the items were found upon searching the house. The sergeant could not give valid explanations for having the items in his possession.
A suspended SAPS sergeant attached to the Anti-Gang Unit appeared before the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court on April 7, on serious charges relating to the unlawful possession of weapons, ammunition, and explosives.
Sergeant Fannie Ezekiel Nkosi (42) made his first court appearance following his arrest on April 2.
Nkosi faces a string of charges, including unlawful possession of explosives, three counts of failure to safeguard firearms and eight counts of failure to safeguard ammunition. He also faces defeating the administration of justice, failure to install a compliant firearm safe in line with South African Bureau of Standards regulations, and theft.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the arrest stems from intelligence received by a task team established by the Madlanga Commission.
The tip-off alleged that Nkosi was in possession of unlawful ammunition at his residence in Pretoria North.
NPA regional Lumka Mahanjana said that, acting on this information, authorities searched his home.
During the search, police reportedly discovered firearms, ammunition, a stun grenade, SAPS dockets, and other state-issued items scattered around the house.
In addition to the weapons, officers uncovered more than R50 000 in cash, which was hidden beneath a mattress. Nkosi was allegedly unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for the origin of the money.
Following the search, Nkosi was arrested and has since remained in custody.
Mahanjana confirmed the developments, stating that the court granted the state’s request to postpone the matter to allow for further bail investigations.
She further indicated that the state intends to oppose Nkosi’s release on bail when the matter resumes.
The case has been postponed to April 13, where formal bail proceedings are expected to be heard.
