Newlands safe zone already yielding positive results

It is a security initiative which offers 24-hour help at no cost to residents who feel unsafe.

A newly launched free community safe zone in Newlands, aiming to provide immediate help to anyone who feels unsafe, has already assisted a woman who feared she was being followed.

The safe zone, established by Owen Musiker Specialist Security Solutions at 81 Paprika Street, on the corner of Lois Avenue, is available at no cost to the public and is intended to give residents access to urgent assistance when they feel at risk.

The owner, Owen Musiker, said the initiative was created as a social responsibility project to support the broader community.

“This is a community responsibility from our company to safeguard residents and make sure they feel safe at all times. The safe zone is completely free for everyone. Anyone who feels unsafe can come in and get assistance immediately,” he said.

Musiker said the system was recently used when a woman approached the safe zone after she believed she was being followed.

“It has already been used to help a lady who felt very unsafe. Our staff assisted her and ensured she was safe while additional help was arranged. That is exactly why we established this initiative,” he said.

The safe zone offers immediate access to trained security personnel, a 24-hour control room and co-ordination with emergency services where necessary.

He said they can arrange assistance from reaction companies, ambulances, roadside assistance, and other emergency services to safeguard community members who feel at risk.

Musiker emphasised that the initiative is open to anyone in the community and does not require membership or payment.

“This is not limited to clients. It is completely free for everyone. Whether someone is being followed, feels threatened, or just needs peace of mind until help arrives, they can come to us and we will assist,” he said.

Musiker added that the goal is to create a visible safety point where residents know they can turn during emergencies.

“We want people to know they are not alone. If they feel unsafe, they must come to the safe zone and we will help them immediately. It’s about providing reassurance and practical support when it is needed most,” he said.

The initiative is also supported by brand ambassador Claudia Hinkle, who is assisting in promoting community safety awareness and encouraging residents to make use of the free service.

Musiker said the company hopes the safe zone will strengthen community safety and encourage residents to seek help before situations escalate.

“Our aim is to simply give the community a free, reliable place to go when they feel unsafe. If we can help even one person avoid danger, then the initiative has already made a difference,” he added.
