Eco-friendly shoppers prefer second-hand goods

The sale was started to give residents a chance to sell things they don't use, bring bargains to shoppers and help the environment.

Shoppers from far and wide recently gathered in Brooklyn, east of Pretoria, to partake in the local favourite weekly market, My Car Boot Sale.

Entering its ninth year since its inception, the Car Boot Sale offers attendees a unique, economic, and eco-friendly shopping experience at the corner of Middle Street and next to Magnolia Runners Club, Tram Street, in Nieuw Muckleneuk.

Founder Helga Roper says the current state of climate change is reason enough for the market to continue, as it serves as a platform to purchase goods that could be used by others instead of being thrown in landfills.

“It’s an opportunity for people to put a little cash back into their pockets for the stuff that’s been manufactured already. The carbon footprint is there already; it needs to be reowned, it needs to be reused,” Roper said.

“If you’ve been to our beaches and landfills, you’ll know stuff can’t end up there anymore. This is where it should come, and someone else wants it. So, whatever it is you have and don’t want, come and sell it. The perceived value is there, and someone else will want it,” Roper said.

From clothing, arts and crafts, toys, cutlery, posters, paintings, DVDs, family heirlooms, vintage technology, and children’s items, the over 100 vendors the sale typically sees every Saturday are likely to have something for everyone.

Roper hopes the market will become the place the residents turn to first before buying firsthand, as the Car Boot Sale serves vendors, buyers and the environment.
