Vintage car enthusiasts celebrate roaring 60th anniversary

The club hopes to grow their younger chapters in the coming decades, to continue the tradition when they are gone.

The Pretoria Old Motor Club (POMC) rolled out the classics this weekend as the prominent motor club celebrated their 60th anniversary since its inception in 1966.

The POMC celebrated the milestone with their annual Vintage and Veterans’ Run, which included their stop for ice cream at the Lollipop Roadhouse, where locals could view the classic cars from as far back as 1925.

POMC board member and Cars in the Park project manager, Frik Kraamwinkel, says they continue the annual run and other events to instil the culture in the youth, as they are the ones meant to take it over.

“The only way we’re going to keep it going is if people do something. We’ve got to have more and more committed members who are committed to preserving cars and preserving the club,” Kraamwinkel said.

Chairman of the POMC, Neil Stander, shared similar sentiments, saying: “60 years into it, if they don’t keep it up, who will?”

“Just look at the cars here. If we don’t do that, the heritage will be lost, and the future generations won’t get to see these vehicles. It’s the history, part of the motoring history of our country and of the world, and many of these vehicles have been imported and restored,” Stander said.

Stander shared that they have a big drive at the moment called the Young Bloods movement, to bring in younger generations, “so they can learn the trade and bring more modern vehicles into the classic movement”.

The POMC looks forward to hosting its monthly events throughout the year. The next meeting will be at Castle Walk on May 24, followed by several other themed events, including British Day, European Day, Japanese Day, Spring Day and Cars at the Park, as well as several fun runs and monthly club meets.
