Cellphone theft in Die Wilgers results in freeway chase ending in Sinoville

A warning has been issued urging residents to beware ride-hailing services, as a recent incident involved a cellphone being stolen from a passenger. Verify the driver and number plate before entering the vehicle.

Residents are being warned to exercise extreme caution when using ride-hailing services, following a high-speed chase involving a vehicle linked to a cellphone theft case.

The incident unfolded during routine patrols in Die Wilgers, where members of Old East Safety Forum identified a vehicle sought in connection with a cellphone theft reported.

According to Old East Safety Forum spokesperson Jarad Frimmel, the case highlights a growing trend of criminals targeting unsuspecting victims through everyday transport methods.

“Criminals are actively targeting victims who rely on ride-sharing services. We urge residents to always verify driver and vehicle details before getting into any vehicle and to report suspicious activity immediately,” he said.

He said the vehicle was spotted outside a nightclub in Die Wilgers, where members attempted to approach the driver.

The suspect allegedly accelerated and fled the scene at high speed, prompting a pursuit onto the N4 freeway in an easterly direction.

“The chase continued towards Mamelodi, where the suspect managed to evade members, leading to the pursuit being called off,” said Frimmel.

However, the vehicle remained under observation, with security teams maintaining high alert.

Frimmel said shortly afterwards, the vehicle was detected again entering the Sinoville area. Members of Proshield Security, who were already on standby, initiated a second pursuit.

He added that through co-ordinated efforts and tactical manoeuvres, the suspect vehicle was successfully brought to a stop.

“The driver, however, abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot into nearby bushes, evading immediate arrest.”

Frimmel said the vehicle was secured at the scene and handed over to the SAPS for further investigation.

Authorities are currently working to locate the suspect and link him formally to the cellphone theft case.

He added that the incident serves as a stark reminder for residents to remain vigilant, particularly when making use of transport services.

“Always confirm the number plate and driver details before entering a vehicle. If anything seems suspicious, trust your instincts and do not proceed,” he said.

The forum also extended its appreciation to all role players involved in the operation, including CSI Security, Proshield Security and SAPS, for their swift and co-ordinated response.

Residents are urged to prioritise their safety at all times and to report any suspicious activity to local security structures or law enforcement.

Police did not respond at the time of publication.
