Ward 3 gets new high mast lighting under city lighting programme
The metro has switched on newly installed high mast lights in Ward 3 as part of its electrification and service delivery drive. Officials say the initiative is intended to improve safety, address long-standing lighting complaints and reduce crime in dark areas.
After repeated requests, the high mast lights in Ward 3 were recently installed and switched on to improve visibility and safety.
The metro’s Energy and Electricity Business Unit (EEBU) oversaw the effort, led by MMC for Utility Services, Frans Boshielo, and Ward 3 councillor, Malesela Rakebe.
Boshielo said the switching of the high mast lights forms part of the #SwitchOnTshwane programme in Region 3, Ward 3.
It is an ongoing service delivery and electrification initiative by the metro aimed at improving community safety and quality of life through infrastructure development.

“We’ve promised the residents of Tshwane that we would be able to move from one region to another, one ward to another, and from one street to another, ensuring that the people of Tshwane have enough lighting.
“We’re going to switch on these lights, and we’re urging the City of Tshwane’s residents to look after this infrastructure. This infrastructure will ensure that there’s high visibility, and people will be safer, and kids can play in the park,” Boshielo said.
The programme primarily focuses on public lighting, household electrification, and infrastructure upgrades, the latest of which is the ongoing refurbishments at the Blesbok 11kV Secondary Substation in Ward 84, set to be completed in May.
Malesela said that streetlighting has been an issue that has been repeatedly complained about by residents over the years, and is grateful that the EEBU is finally attending to it.
“This intervention came after years of requesting high mast lights due to non-working streetlights. Crime has skyrocketed in our communities due to dark streets, and the city really does seem to find a way to resolve this challenge.

“The provision of high mast lighting will definitely address the issue block by block at a time, and there will be light; we were allocated three of them.”
One is in Phillip Nel at Spain Park, one at Kiepersol in Proclamation Hill, and the other one is “still a foundation that will go up just next week at Proclamation Hill”.
“We are awaiting the second allocation for Kwaggasrand, West Park, and Pretoria West. Sincere appreciation to the MMC of Utilities, Mr Boshielo, for hearing our outcry and addressing our issue. there will finally be light surrounding that area,” Rakebe said.
