Metro clamps down on debtors in and around CBD
Through the YaTima drive, the metro is enforcing payment compliance, but also instilling financial discipline in residents and businesses.
The Mayor, Dr Nasiphi Moya, is leading revenue collection efforts in the CBD and western parts of Pretoria.
Moya has been on the ground with technical teams disconnecting owing entities, particularly in the residential property sector.
They have issued final notices or fines, while several payment arrangements were made.
Deputy Mayor and MMC for Finance, Eugene Modise, stated that a total 32 518 accounts were actioned in April alone, representing a collective owed debt of R17-billion.
So far, 791 of these accounts have entered payment arrangements, totalling an amount of almost R76-million to be paid to the metro, while collections and settlements carried out, totalled R26.7-million recovered.
Modise asserted that the YaTima drive is not focused solely on enforcement, but also on instilling financial discipline in residents and businesses.
“The Tshwane YaTima campaign is rooted in the principle of fairness; ensuring that all customers contribute equitably toward the services they receive,” he said.
“Revenue collection is the backbone of municipal functionality.
“It enables the city to maintain infrastructure, deliver essential services and invest in future growth. This progress signals a growing culture of accountability and co-operation between the city and its residents,” he said.
Modise said the metro “continues to prioritise engagement, education, and support for customers who are committed to settling their accounts”.
The metro is encouraging residents to take advantage of payment arrangements to avoid disconnections, fines or other legal consequences, as it maintains that building a financially stable municipality is non-negotiable.
