Centurion climber making an impact on and off the wall
Known for her growing success in climbing, the young athlete is also quietly giving back through her work with animal rescue and her commitment to community.
While many may recognise Caitlin Bouwer for her growing presence on the international climbing stage, the talented 19-year-old from Centurion is quietly shaping a story that extends far beyond competition walls and podium finishes.
Bouwer, who has spent the past few years representing South Africa and carving out a name for herself in the fast-growing sport of climbing, describes her journey as one rooted in ambition and perspective.
Having grown up in Centurion, she says her environment played a significant role in shaping who she is today.
She explains that her upbringing took place in a balanced environment with a strong sense of community, adding that being surrounded by supportive people helped shape both her work ethic and her mindset.
Now at 19, Bouwer reflects on how much she has evolved, not just as an athlete but as a person.
“A few years ago, everything felt very result-driven, but now I’m able to focus on the process and personal growth as well,” she says.
That shift in mindset has extended beyond sport, as she has grown more independent and increasingly aware of the impact she can have on others.

Long before international competitions and national representation, Bouwer was a curious and energetic child who thrived outdoors.
She recalls always being busy, whether through sport, spending time with animals or simply exploring.
That early connection to animals has remained a constant in her life, revealing what she describes as both a determined personality and a softer, more compassionate side.
“I think I’ve always had quite a determined personality, but also a softer side, especially when it comes to animals,” she notes.
When she is not training or competing, Bouwer prioritises balance. Her days are often spent attending to personal responsibilities before she makes time to unwind with family and friends or at a place that has become especially meaningful to her: Pretoria Dog Rescue, where she is a volunteer.
“I also enjoy more relaxed things, like spending time in nature or doing small, creative projects when I have the time.”
She also values quiet moments to rest and reset, something she sees as essential in maintaining both her physical and mental well-being.
It is her work with the dog rescue that offers perhaps the clearest glimpse of who Bouwer is beyond her athletic identity.
What began as a school project quickly grew into a lasting commitment.
“I connected with the work and the animals, and I’ve stayed involved ever since.
“Many people are surprised by how involved I am with dog rescue and training. It’s something I’m really passionate about,” adds Bouwer.
Today, her involvement includes caring for and training dogs, helping to socialise them, assisting with adoptions, and even contributing to the organisation’s social media efforts.
Through this work, Bouwer says she has learned lessons that extend far beyond sport. She speaks of patience, responsibility, and empathy, noting that working with animals has a way of putting life into perspective.
Her motivation to stay involved is deeply personal, as she believes that everyone has a responsibility to use whatever platform or ability they have to make a difference.
For her, animal rescue is not only close to her heart but also incredibly rewarding, as it allows her to play a role in giving animals a second chance.
Despite her growing list of achievements, Bouwer remains grounded, a quality she attributes largely to her family and upbringing.
“My family and environment keep me grounded. My family has always treated me the same regardless of results, reminding me that I am more than my achievements. Staying connected to initiatives like volunteering also helps me maintain that perspective,” she says.
Her approach to success reflects this mindset. Rather than focusing solely on results, she defines success through consistency, growth, and staying true to her values.
She explains that if she knows she has put in the work and improved, then that is success. It is a philosophy that continues to guide her both on and off the wall.

While climbing remains her primary focus, Bouwer is open to opportunities that allow her to contribute in meaningful ways.
Most of the initiatives she becomes involved in stem from personal connections or causes she genuinely cares about, reinforcing her desire to live with intention.
Looking ahead, her ambitions reach beyond medals and accolades.
She hopes to become someone who makes a positive impact, whether through sport, community work or simply through how she treats others.
Bouwer says she wants to inspire people not just through achievements but through her actions and values.
In many ways, her story is still being written one climb, one challenge, and one act of kindness at a time.
As her name continues to rise in the world of sport climbing, it is clear that who she is beyond the sport may leave an even more lasting impression.
