Klipdrift water project nears completion as officials assess Hammanskraal readiness
Relief may soon be on the horizon for Hammanskraal residents as the Klipdrift Package Plant nears completion. The government says the project will boost water supply and restore reliable access to safe drinking water after years of ongoing challenges.
The long-awaited Klipdrift Package Plant project is nearing completion, with the government expressing confidence that the development will significantly improve water supply to parts of Hammanskraal.
The project, which is expected to supply 50 megalitres of potable water per day, forms part of ongoing efforts by national, provincial, and local governments to strengthen water infrastructure and ensure sustainable access to clean drinking water for affected communities.
Minister of Water and Sanitation, Pemmy Majodina, said the government remains committed to delivering reliable and dignified water services to residents as progress continues on the major intervention project.
“Water is life and sanitation is dignity,” said Majodina.
Government leaders continue monitoring progress linked to the project and the readiness of supporting infrastructure connected to the Hammanskraal water network.

Last year, Majodina announced that more Hammanskraal communities would begin receiving water through the Klipdrift Water Treatment Works intervention project following the handover of Module 2 on June 29, 2025.
The government said areas expected to benefit from Module 2 included Majakaneng on the eastern side of Makapanstad Road, Kudube Units 1, 2, 3, 6, 10 and Unit D, as well as Jubilee Tower, Jubilee Direct and Dominican Tower.
The department also noted that Module 1 had already been supplying water since January 6 to Mandela Village, Marokolong, Ramotse, Kekana Gardens (Steve Bikoville) and Babelegi Industrial.
According to government, the progress achieved in Hammanskraal was the result of collaboration between the Department of Water and Sanitation, the Gauteng Provincial Government and the Tshwane metro.
MMC for Human Settlements, Alderman Aaron Maluleka, said the Klipdrift Package Plant construction is at an advanced stage, and will play a key role in stabilising water supply systems in Hammanskraal.
Maluleka said the project forms part of co-ordinated intergovernmental efforts aimed at strengthening infrastructure, improving network reliability and accelerating sustainable water security for communities that have endured years of water challenges.
The Tshwane metro, alongside national and provincial government departments, has been working to improve bulk water infrastructure connected to the Renstown, Temba, and Babelegi reservoir systems.
Maluleka said assessments of receiving infrastructure were important to ensure that communities are able to receive quality water once the plant becomes operational.
“With the project at an advanced stage, inspections assessed the readiness of the receiving infrastructure to distribute quality water to communities,” he said.

The initiative has brought together several spheres of government, including Gauteng MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Jacob Mamabolo and the Mayor, Dr Nasiphi Moya. They have both been involved in efforts to address long-standing water issues in the area.
Hammanskraal has faced persistent water supply and quality concerns for years, with residents repeatedly calling for urgent intervention and long-term solutions to restore confidence in the area’s water system.
The Klipdrift Package Plant is expected to become one of the most major water interventions in the region, with hopes that it will improve living conditions for thousands of residents once fully operational.
Majodina said collaboration between all spheres remains essential to ensuring the successful completion of the project and the delivery of safe drinking water to communities.
