Cross-border vehicle theft plot foiled in Kameeldrift

A multi-agency operation on Moloto Road led to the arrest of a suspect and the recovery of a stolen Nissan Navara allegedly destined for cross-border smuggling.

A co-ordinated operation involving law enforcement agencies and private security companies recently led to the recovery of a stolen vehicle and the arrest of a suspect in Kameeldrift.

The operation took place along Moloto Road after information was received from a confidential source regarding a stolen Nissan Navara allegedly being prepared for transportation across the border from the Pretoria area.

According to the ProShield Security, the information was verified and an operational plan was immediately put into action.

Members from the Tshwane District Stabilization Task Team, SAPS Kameeldrift, and private security strategically deployed along key exit routes believed to be used by vehicle smuggling syndicates.

Mark Surgeon of ProShield Security Services said the team later spotted a silver-grey vehicle matching the description travelling with Mpumalanga registration plates on Moloto Road.

“Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver allegedly fled the scene, resulting in a brief chase.

“A tactical takedown was successfully executed and one suspect was arrested at the scene. Authorities confirmed that the vehicle had been reported stolen in a Pretoria Moot case earlier this month,” said Surgeon.

A cellphone believed to be linked to the suspect was also seized during the operation.

“All evidence was booked in at Kameeldrift SAPS, while the stolen vehicle was processed and taken to the SAPS Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit pound for further investigation.”

Surgeon praised the collaborative effort between police and private security role players.

“This successful recovery highlights the importance of intelligence-driven operations and strong co-operation between SAPS, private security and tracking companies.

“Criminal networks involved in vehicle theft continue to operate across provincial and international routes, but co-ordinated efforts like this send a strong message that law enforcement remains committed to disrupting these activities,” he said.
