Joint Erasmia operation targets illegal shebeens

Authorities say the crackdown forms part of ongoing efforts to restore safety and reclaim community spaces such as the Helena Street Park from criminal activity.

A joint law enforcement operation conducted in Erasmia on the night of May 22 resulted in the arrest of three suspects and the closure of multiple illegal shebeens operating within the community.

Erasmia CPF chairman Pritesh Bhana said the operation was carried out by the SAPS in partnership with CPF Erasmia Sector 1, together with private security companies.

“The operation focused primarily on illegal activities taking place around the Helena Street municipal park and surrounding areas,” he said.

Bhana said two additional illegal shebeens were targeted during the operation, while high-visibility patrols, stop-and-search activities, and crime prevention operations were conducted throughout Erasmia.

“During the operation, law enforcement officials achieved the following successes: three suspects were arrested, six crates of alcohol confiscated and an illegal alcohol sales shebeen operating from municipal property was shut down,” he added.

Bhana stated that the operation forms part of ongoing efforts aimed at restoring safety, law and order within the community.

He added that municipal parks are meant for families, children and residents; not for illegal drinking spots, criminal activity and public disorder.

“The CPF calls on relevant municipal departments and council representatives to work closely with community structures in addressing ongoing concerns surrounding the Helena Street park, including allegations relating to the illegal sale of alcohol from the premises,” said Bhana.

He added that combating illegal immigrants, drug dealers, illegal shebeens, and other criminal elements remains one of the CPF’s top priorities as part of broader efforts to reclaim and clean up the community.

Bhana urged residents to continue supporting law enforcement and community policing initiatives through co-operation and information sharing.

“A safer community requires unity and partnership,” he concluded.

Tshwane SAPS spokesperson Johan van Dyk said SAPS Erasmia thanked everyone who participated in the operation.
