Police foil alleged bribery attempt during Wonderboompoort arrest

Suspected stolen property worth R250 000 were recovered. Police officers rejected an alleged R10 000 bribe during the arrest.

A 34-year-old foreign national is expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court after being arrested in Wonderboompoort on multiple charges, including possession of suspected stolen property, contravention of immigration laws, and allegedly attempting to bribe police officers.

The arrest was carried out on June 9 as part of ongoing crime prevention efforts in the area.

During the operation, police reportedly discovered various items believed to be stolen and valued at about R250 000.

According to police, officers acted on information that led them to the suspect.

Upon searching the premises, they recovered a range of goods suspected to be linked to criminal activities.

The items were subsequently seized for further investigation.

Police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk said the suspect was immediately taken into custody after officers established that he was allegedly in possession of stolen property.

“During the arrest, the suspect allegedly attempted to offer police officers R10 000 in an effort to avoid being arrested.

“The officers refused the bribe and proceeded with the arrest in accordance with the law,” said Van Dyk.

He praised the officers for maintaining their professionalism and integrity despite the alleged attempt to influence the arrest process.

“The actions of our members demonstrate that corruption will not be tolerated. We commend the officers for refusing the alleged bribe and ensuring that the suspect was brought before the justice system,” he said.

The recovered goods, valued at around a quarter of a million rand, will form part of the investigation as detectives work to establish their origins and identify any victims who may have been affected.

The suspect remained in police custody ahead of his court appearance in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.

Police have encouraged residents to continue reporting suspicious activities and criminal behaviour, saying community co-operation remains vital in the fight against crime and corruption.
