129 new streetlights on Sinovich Drive

The ward councillor says motorists will now be able to drive safely at night.

The Tshwane metro has installed 129 new streetlights along Sinovich Drive in the east of Pretoria in Ward 91, Region 6.

This, according to the metro, is a move aimed at improving public safety, enhancing visibility and strengthening critical infrastructure.

The project forms part of the metro’s #SwitchOnTshwane service delivery programme and aligns with broader efforts to improve service delivery and invest in infrastructure that directly benefits communities.

MMC for Utility Services Frans Boshielo said the streetlights demonstrate the multiparty coalition government’s commitment to creating safer and better-connected communities.

Boshielo said the newly installed lighting on the route is expected to improve visibility for motorists, pedestrians, and public transport users, while also supporting crime prevention initiatives in the area.

“Reliable public lighting enhances road safety, supports economic activity and helps create safer public spaces for communities,” he said.

He said the project also contributes to the metro’s electricity stabilisation plan, which focuses on restoring, upgrading and expanding electricity infrastructure to improve network reliability and support economic growth across Pretoria.

Boshielo said infrastructure investments remain central to the metro’s strategy to improve residents’ quality of life while building a resilient electricity network.

“This project is part of our broader efforts to strengthen public infrastructure and ensure residents benefit from reliable services that support long-term growth and development,” he said.

Beyond infrastructure improvements, the project created temporary employment opportunities for 20 community members, contributing to local economic development and skills transfer.

Boshielo also praised officials from the Energy and Electricity Business Unit and other stakeholders involved in the successful completion of the project.

He added that the metro will continue accelerating infrastructure investment through programmes such as #SwitchOnTshwane and the electricity stabilisation plan to improve service delivery, strengthen public infrastructure and create safer environments for residents.

Ward 91 councillor Henning Viljoen said, “The lighting will improve the city as well as improve visibility on the road.”

Viljoen said motorists will now be able to have proper vision at night and will be able to see the potholes.
