Universities showcase opportunities at Pilditch career expo

Young people were urged to embrace education and make informed career choices as universities, colleges and industry representatives gathered to showcase opportunities for further study and skills development.

The Edukheshin for All Career Expo welcomed over 25 public universities and several private colleges to promote careers to learners at the Pilditch Stadium for a day filled with hope and opportunity.

Each pavilion offered unique opportunities for learners and young people to explore study options, career pathways, and skills development opportunities whilst interacting with industry leaders in various fields.

The NPO, Edukheshin for All, intended to use the expo to broaden horizons and help young people make informed career decisions.

Among the attendees was the Mayor of Tshwane, Dr Nasiphi Moya, who said that the days when education was fashionable are gone, and there are now systemic and financial barriers hindering access to those who want to learn.

“Your generation has no choice but to be successful; that doesn’t start with alcohol, drugs, gangsterism or teenage pregnancy. It starts with how you carry yourself, listening to your teachers, and the values you hold that guide your life.

“You won’t be successful if you think it’s in the hands of another person and not in what you do every day. You have all these people here today to help you, inform you and give you options. Today is not about finding girlfriends and boyfriends; today is about building a future,” Moya said.

Moya said she hoped that from the crowd of learners, first-generation graduates would emerge, and thanked Edukheshin for All, for hosting the event.

MMC for Community Safety, Alderman Hannes Coetzee, said that he hoped the event reminded the youth that their futures are in their hands alone, no one else’s.

“It was a day where people showed their skills in assisting and encouraging the youth to build a bright future; not to wait for the moment but to create the moment; your future is in your hands and not in a negative person’s mouth,” Coetzee said.
