Patience urged as Parkmore Reservoir stabilises

Temporary repairs have been done to a faulty valve at the Parkmore Reservoir. The metro will notify the public about when permanent repairs will be done.

Water supply is gradually being restored to several Pretoria east suburbs after the Tshwane metro completed emergency repairs to a faulty valve at the Parkmore Low-Level Reservoir.

The recent interruption affected residents across parts of Garsfontein and surrounding areas. A fault developed on the outgoing pipeline from the reservoir.

Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said a contractor had successfully completed temporary repairs to the faulty valve, allowing the city to begin restoring water to affected communities.

“Water supply is being restored progressively as the system stabilises and reservoirs and pipelines refill. Recovery times may vary depending on location and elevation within the network,” said Mashigo.

The affected areas included Alphen Park, Ashlea Gardens, Constantia Park, Faerie Glen, Garsfontein, Lynnwood Glen, Lynnwood Park, Menlyn, Newlands, Waterkloof Glen, Maroelana and De Beers, as well as several extensions within these suburbs.

Mashigo said customers may experience varying recovery times as the distribution network continues to stabilise.

Residents in higher-lying areas are expected to wait longer for normal water pressure to return while reservoirs and pipelines refill.

Although the emergency repairs have enabled the restoration process, Mashigo said further work will still be required to permanently repair the valve chamber.

He said a separate public notice will be issued to inform residents of a planned shutdown that will be necessary to carry out the permanent repairs.

“Details of the maintenance schedule and the areas expected to be affected will be communicated before the work takes place.”

Mashigo appealed to residents to remain patient while the network recovers and to use water responsibly during the restoration process to help stabilise the system.

He also thanked them for their patience and understanding, and said the metro remains committed to restoring and maintaining a reliable water supply to residents.
