Residents urged to support neighbourhood improvement projects

The precinct is encouraging residents to help fund ongoing infrastructure improvements, including pothole repairs, park maintenance, streetlight restoration and future community safety initiatives.

The South of Middle (SoM) Precinct has embarked on its latest community improvement initiative, with teams repairing potholes to improve road safety and enhance the overall condition of the neighbourhood.

The project is the latest in a series of community-led interventions undertaken by the precinct to address infrastructure challenges, while working alongside the Tshwane metro.

SoM spokesperson Faan Nel said the organisation remains committed to maintaining public spaces and creating an environment that residents and visitors can take pride in.

“Our SoM team is out and about, working around the SoM Precinct to help clean up our roads, gardens, and sidewalks.

From clearing, tidying and maintaining public spaces to keeping the precinct looking cared for, every small effort helps create a cleaner, safer and more welcoming environment for everyone,” said Nel.

The pothole repair programme follows several other projects completed by the precinct over the past year, including restoring public parks, repairing streetlights, cleaning public dustbins, and improving gardens and sidewalks throughout the area.

The precinct has also worked with contractors and the metro to repair damaged roads, while volunteers continue to identify areas requiring maintenance.

According to Nel, the organisation believes that consistent community involvement can make a noticeable difference to the appearance and functionality of public spaces.

“The SoM Precinct Community is actively working to improve our neighbourhood by fixing potholes, repairing streetlights, cleaning dustbins, upgrading the once-abandoned park, and exploring better security measures – all on your behalf,” he said.

The precinct also transformed a neglected public park into a clean, usable community space through ongoing maintenance and upgrades.

Once affected by illegal dumping and neglect, the park is now regularly maintained and used by residents for community activities.

Alongside infrastructure improvements, the precinct has also been exploring additional safety initiatives to make the area more secure for residents, businesses, and visitors.

Nel said the organisation depends on financial support from the community to continue delivering these improvements.

“By making a small monthly contribution, you can help support these initiatives and be part of developing the SoM Precinct community for the better,” he said.

He added that every contribution helps fund projects that directly benefit the precinct, from road maintenance and public space upgrades to future safety initiatives.

Nel hopes the organisation’s work will encourage more residents and businesses to become actively involved in caring for their neighbourhood.

“Our goal is to build a precinct where people feel safe, where public spaces are well maintained and where the community works together to solve local challenges,” said Nel.

The SoM Precinct said it will continue identifying priority infrastructure projects and collaborating with residents, businesses and the metro to improve the precinct one project at a time.
