Growing up in a crowded home in Soshanguve Block K, where 11 family members shared one household, Elray Tema (19) learned early that determination, respect and hard work could outweigh even the most limited circumstances. Today, the University of Cape Town (UCT) student is using those lessons to help learners improve their academic performance through the Acareo Tutoring Centre and Acareo Foundation.
Born on May 25th, 2007, Tema spent his early years living with his mother, aunt, and grandmother. While none of the three women completed matric, they encouraged him to value education and persevere despite challenges.
“My mother has been my biggest influence. She took care of me and made sure I had what I needed, just like any other child,” shared Tema.
He attended Phuthanang Primary School, where one of his fondest memories was reaching district level in athletics and long jump. His passion for academics developed in Grade 9 after joining the Sartlas Maths Practice programme, while his interest in public speaking also grew at Reitumetse Secondary School, where he represented the school at the provincial level.
A strict study routine later helped him achieve seven distinctions in his matric year.
“I followed a strict timetable. I used YouTube videos to learn content. To revise, I formed study groups with friends and explained concepts to them,” explained Tema.
He also completed past examination papers under timed conditions to improve both his understanding and time management.
His school journey was not without obstacles. During his final year, after standing for the Representative Council of learners (RCL) presidency, he became a target of online bullying. Rather than allowing it to discourage him, he chose to focus on his goals.
“I chose not to give them much attention. I believe that if they didn’t harm me, they would not stop me from shining,” said Tema.
That outlook remained with him at UCT, where he is studying towards a Bachelor of Science degree. He said the university exposed him to new cultures, broadened his thinking, and encouraged him to dream even bigger.
Driven by a childhood love for teaching, Tema founded Acareo Tutoring Centre after recognising that overcrowded classrooms often prevented learners from receiving enough individual attention. What began with a chalkboard, chalk, and a shack at his home has since grown into a tutoring centre offering Mathematics and Physical Sciences lessons. These are offered both in person and online.
“My proudest moment was tutoring a learner who came to us with a level 3 in Mathematics. After attending our lessons, he improved to a level 7 and was inspired to become a tutor himself,” expressed Tema.
He later established the Acareo Foundation to support learners from disadvantaged backgrounds through free educational programmes and initiatives.
“I started the foundation to tutor learners from disadvantaged homes and ensure that financial status does not limit their education,” explained Tema.
The foundation hosts free winter lessons for Grade 8 and 9 Learners, raises awareness about neurodivergence, and supports students affected by capped bursaries and student debt.
Looking ahead, Tema hopes to expand Acareo across Gauteng while adding more subjects and career preparation programmes. Personally, he aims to complete his studies and pursue a career as a quantitative analyst or business intelligence analyst.
Reflecting on his journey, Tema encouraged young people not to allow their circumstances to define them.
