Motorists travelling along the R80 Mabopane Highway toward Berg Avenue can now expect an unobstructed view of their surroundings after AfriForum Noord van die Berg’s neighbourhood team cleared overgrown vegetation in the area this week.

The clean-up operation focused on dense bushes located beneath the bridge in Berg Avenue and along both sides of the nearby highway.

According to AfriForum, the overgrown vegetation posed a potential fire hazard and created ideal hiding places for individuals who may be monitoring the area for criminal activity.

The initiative forms part of the organisation’s ongoing efforts to improve community safety and address environmental concerns before they develop into larger problems.

By removing the thick vegetation, the team aimed to improve visibility for motorists and pedestrians while reducing the risk of fires, particularly during the dry winter season when grass and bush fires can spread rapidly.

AfriForum Noord van die Berg branch representative Zanelle Janse van Vuuren said community safety remains at the heart of the organisation’s work.

“At AfriForum, our focus is always safety. Our neighbourhood team does its part every day to help make environments safer and look better.

“Areas with overgrown vegetation can create both safety and fire risks, which is why it is important that we take proactive steps to address these concerns,” said Janse van Vuuren.

She added that the organisation believes strong communities are built through active participation and co-operation among residents.

The clean-up forms part of a broader programme undertaken by AfriForum’s neighbourhood teams, which regularly conduct maintenance and safety projects in public spaces across the area.

These projects include clearing overgrown vegetation, removing litter, improving visibility in high-risk areas and supporting initiatives aimed at preventing crime.

Residents have previously expressed concerns about overgrown areas near bridges and highways, noting that such locations can become hiding places for criminals and contribute to a sense of insecurity.

Dense vegetation can also obstruct sightlines, making it more difficult for road users and law enforcement to identify suspicious activity.

Janse van Vuuren encouraged residents to join in community-driven initiatives and contribute to efforts aimed at creating safer neighbourhoods.

“Every member’s contribution makes a difference. We invite residents who want to be part of the solution to get involved and help us build safer communities,” she said.

AfriForum said it will continue working with volunteers and community members to identify and address safety concerns throughout the Noord van die Berg area, reinforcing its commitment to creating cleaner, safer and more resilient neighbourhoods.
