Pedro Barbosa scores multiple Afri-Indie nods
Rising local artist Pedro Barbosa is making waves in the music industry after earning multiple Afri-Indie Award nominations.
Pedro Barbosa is a rising giant in the local music scene, with a voice that turns heads and a presence that’s hard to ignore.
His song Go Let Go received two nominations for Best Adult Contemporary Single and Best Music Video for this year’s Afri-Indie Awards. Barbosa says the song comes from “a place I used to be many years ago. I got stuck in the past and struggled to let go and move on completely”.
The song was recorded just before he went for vocal surgery to remove a growth on his vocal chord and he describes it as feeling like ‘crossing over’.
He says he wanted the music video to be artistic. The video is partly stock footage and filmed by Full Spectrum Media.
“Due to budget constraints, we couldn’t afford to shoot the whole video. I then edited the video and put it all together. I was very surprised it got nominated.”

We Are Light was also nominated for Best Music Video. Barbosa says the song was especially written for Rada, a non-profit organisation for children in need, who come from broken homes.
Shenka Doherty was the video creator and created three characters: one based on Pedro and the other two on Marvel characters but with her own twist.
“I’m a huge Marvel fan,” he says.
“The idea was to empower people. I wanted the song to make everyone feel like they belong and are part of something. And together we create one world voice.”

He also received nominations for Best Performer and Best Songwriter. On Marc Beling being nominated for Best Producer, he says: “Mark Beling deserves it. He is a big part of my success and the one who puts everything together; he is the glue to my music.”
His music is available on any streaming platform.
The Afri-Indie Awards give recognition to independent artists and take place on August 25 at the AfriForum Theatre.
