The Yard construction commences in Rosslyn
A new retail development at Rosslyn Hub is set to strengthen economic activity, create jobs and bring investment closer to residents and businesses in the area.
The Rosslyn Hub has taken another major step towards becoming a key mixed-use economic precinct in Pretoria following the sod-turning ceremony for The Yard retail development.
The ceremony marked the beginning of construction on the about 9 700m² convenience retail development, which forms part of the broader 100-hectare Rosslyn Hub precinct and the Tshwane Automotive City (TAC).
Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya said the development demonstrated growing confidence in Rosslyn and the Tshwane Metro, while highlighting the importance of collaboration between government and the private sector.
“The occasion represents a demonstration of confidence in Rosslyn, in Tshwane and in the potential of partnerships between government and the private sector to turn plans and investment into tangible economic opportunities,” she said.
The mayor said The Yard will be anchored by Shoprite and will have a 70% national tenant footprint, bringing commercial activity closer to people living and working in Rosslyn.
The development is expected to contribute to the local economy by creating opportunities for businesses, entrepreneurs and job seekers, while providing residents with greater access to retail services.
Moya said economic growth remained a key priority for her administration, with the Tshwane Economic Revitalisation Strategy (TERS) targeting economic growth of 3.9% by 2029.
She said achieving this target would require continued investment, business expansion, infrastructure development and job creation across the metro.
Rosslyn is central to these ambitions because of its position within the TAC, an economic ecosystem linked to major manufacturers and industries, including Chery, BMW, Iveco and Tata.
According to the metro, the TAC has the potential to attract about R500-billion in investment over 50 years.
Its three priority nodes have an estimated investment case of about R42-billion and could create almost 60 000 jobs over 15 years.
More than 1 400 construction jobs have already been created through bulk infrastructure investment in the area, highlighting the economic benefits generated even before developments are completed.
The metro also welcomed more than R1-billion in bulk infrastructure investment secured for the broader Rosslyn Hub precinct.
The precinct is planned as an about 700 000m² mixed-use development incorporating housing, logistics, vehicle distribution, retail, healthcare, education, hospitality and other supporting facilities.
Housing is also forming part of the development, with about 1 100 homes already delivered and another 1 180 apartments planned.
The precinct is also home to Spark Rosslyn Hub Primary School.
The metro said the investment momentum in Rosslyn was further reflected by Yanfeng Plastic Omnium South Africa’s R670-million greenfield investment, its first investment outside mainland China.
The mayor said the metro would have to continue improving infrastructure planning, streamlining municipal processes and supporting responsible development to ensure that economic growth translates into meaningful benefits for communities.
“The metro must continue doing its part by improving infrastructure planning, making municipal processes more efficient, supporting responsible development and ensuring that growth areas are aligned with Tshwane’s broader economic and spatial priorities.”
