Centurion woman celebrates 90 years

Laing's natural caring nature has inspired many of her friends and family.

A Centurion woman has reached an incredible milestone last week celebrating her 90th birthday.

Born in Scotland in 1932, Mary Laing moved to South Africa, leaving a war-torn Europe behind.

Laing met her husband, Carlos Laing, before the two moved to South Africa in search of a better life.

With her naturally caring nature, Laing soon attracted many people around her and had a large group of friends.

Her daughter, Fiona Jane, described her as a Florence Nightingale-like person.

Laing was treated to a special ceremony at her church.

“My mom is such an inspiration to us all, she’s the most wonderful and loving person you’ll ever meet,” she said.

“She worked for my dad at his business, but then he got motor neuron disease and she had to step in and take care of him.

“She looked after him for many years, and it was a very difficult period in her life, but they both lived with my sister until he passed away in 1993.”

Laing also has a creative streak and loves to paint and make cards and serviette rings.

She was also fond of arranging flowers.

She supported her husband until his death in 1993.

“She was always busy making things, and she was also a fantastic mother and wife who was always willing to help her children and husband.”

She is blessed with 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Laing’s love for people runs very deep, and she would always make an effort to visit people who were lonely or forgotten by others.

She hopes to receive a letter from the queen when she turns 100.
