Laudium man nabbed for ‘dealing in drugs’
The 23-year-old was arrested in possession of suspected drugs with an estimated street value of R6 000.
A 23-year-old man was arrested in possession of suspected marijuana in Laudium on Wednesday afternoon.
Laudium police spokesperson Sergeant Simon Chokoe said officers patrolling the area received information from a community member during a stop-and-search operation about a man who allegedly deals in marijuana.
Chokoe said the officers acted swiftly and a man matching the given description was spotted and cornered in Itireleng informal settlement.
“Upon searching the suspect, the police found and seized transparent bags containing marijuana,” he said.
“The drugs are estimated to be worth R6 000 in street value.”
Chokoe said the 23-year-old was immediately arrested on suspicion of dealing in drugs and is expected to appear in court soon.
He said the police will continue with more visibility patrols and stop-and-search operations around Laudium to ensure that communities are safe.
The Laudium SAPS station commander Lieutenant-Colonel David Sithole applauded the officers for their swift and quick response that led to the arrest of the suspect.
Sithole also applauded members of the community for continuing to work with the police on fighting crime.
Rekord previously reported several incidents of dealing in drugs in the informal settlement.
Police increased their visibility patrols in the area and joined forces with private security groups and the local CPF.
Chokoe told Rekord in 2021 that dealing in drugs is a big problem in the area and the police are working to curb the crime.
Community members are urged to report any crime to the nearest police station or on 08600 10111.
