Disabled learners in the East prepared for life beyond school
The engagement empowered the disabled learners regarding the opportunities the workplace reserved for them.
The Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) partnered with Disability Workplace Readiness Roadshow last Friday to teach disabled learners at New Hope School the skills they would need to secure employment.
According to Senior Manager of stakeholder management and communication at the MDB, Barileng Dichabe the learners benefitted from the board’s insights and guidance on the future employment opportunities.
Dichabe said it was important for the board to engage with the learners and empower them to take their place in the workplace.
“It’s our way of saying we are available and there are opportunities for people with disabilities within the MDB.
“The benefits of hiring persons with disabilities may be widely acknowledged [but] demystifying, highlighting the largely marginalised disability sector, as well as the sourcing and accessing the relevant skills within this sector remains a challenge,” Dichabe said.
“An event like the roadshow, with its support from corporate South Africa, opens doors, reduces obstacles and exposes learners to an array of opportunities.”
New Hope school principal Gerhard Venter said the insight that learners gained from the programme was extremely important.
“They now see and understand what type of work is out there and the opportunities that are in front of them.”
