Eight arrested with suspected stolen property in Claremont
Other steel structures were found in front of the scrap dealer’s property.
Eight suspects were arrested after the Tshwane metro police found stolen infrastructure belonging to the metro at a scrapyard in Claremont last Thursday.
According to metro police spokesperson Isaac Mahamba, cable theft unit officers received information about a secondhand scrap dealer dealing in suspected stolen municipal property.
“It is alleged that the dealer bought council property illegally from contractors.
“The contractors were appointed to assist the municipality to move the remains of a vandalised nursery in Booysens to the crematorium in Rebecca Street.
He said last week, six contractors were arrested by Hercules SAPS with a truckload of greenhouse structures.
“Other steel structures were found in front of the scrap dealer’s property.
Mahamba said it could not be proven that the contractors were selling these items so a case of suspected stolen property was opened.
“The six suspects were linked to the selling of [other] council property.
“Inside the scrapyard, property of the City Of Tshwane from [another] vandalised nursery next to the Gomora informal settlement was found.
“Two more suspects were arrested and the scrap metal business was closed down.
Mahamba said the metro arrested the manager and his assistant and the two cases will be linked to each other.
“In total, eight suspects have been arrested for these crimes that are ruining our council infrastructure and costing us millions in losses.”
