Fun as Sinoville learners taught about fire safety
The organisation relies on donations from the community to fund its service.
Young learners at the Gereformeerde Gekombineerde Skool Dirk Postma had a fun yet informative time when members of the Sinoville Firefighting Association (SFFA) visited their school on August 12 to teach them about fire safety.
“The visit was fantastic,” said Elani Smith, a grade 7 learner at the school.
“The team not only talked about firefighting, but made it easier for us to understand with a demonstration.”
Learners were also told about what firefighters do in addition to being given fire safety tips.
“One of the firemen wore his full fireman’s suit, with an oxygen mask, and showed us what firefighters dress in when they enter a burning building.”
The association’s visit follows a recent house fire that claimed the life of an elderly man in Waverley.
SFFA spokesperson Zenobia Loock-du Plessis said that they visited the school in the same week fire safety was being taught as part of the syllabus.
“We want to inform learners what to do and what not to do, but we also want to create awareness and teach the kids about fires and fire safety at a young age.
“We also want to encourage learners not to be afraid of the sirens and the firefighters coming to assist.”
SBBV is a non-profit organisation that services greater Sinoville and the Pretoria northern suburbs to combat and prevent fires, complementing the services of the City of Tshwane’s Wonderboom fire station fire brigade.
