Precious metals seized in Rosslyn
During the inspection, paraphernalia and processed powder valued at around R2-million were seized.
The Hawks are investigating a catalytic scrap convertor business in Rosslyn after millions worth of precious metal was seized from its premises on August 17.
The search-and-seizure operation was held by the Hawks’ serious organized crime investigation team.
They were accompanied by customs officials and the South African diamond and precious metals regulator.
It came after the business continued with illegal operations at their premises following a compliance inspection on March 17, 2021, where they were found to be operating without a licence.
During the inspection, paraphernalia and processed powder valued at around R2-million were seized. The owner was warned to cease operations and apply for the requisite refinery licence.
According to Hawks spokesperson Captain Lloyd Ramovha, the team pounced on the second-time offenders at their premises along Hendrik van Eck Street, armed with a search-and-seizure warrant.
“Paraphernalia and powder classified under the precious metals act were found on fully operational premises.
“Upon enquiry, there was no sight of the licence or export approval permits for the shipment.
“The owner was also nowhere to be found with only employees on site.”
Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, the provincial head of the directorate for priority crime investigation, welcomed the operation’s outcome.
“Unscrupulous catalytic convertors and precious metals dealers are warned that we will stop at nothing to ensure that they are halted in their tracks,” he said.
The public was urged to report such illicit activities to authorities, including malicious theft of essential infrastructure.
