Metro completes upgrades at Kosmosdal substation
The R65-million upgrades began in February last year.
The Tshwane metro and Growthpoint Property Group recently completed upgrades at Kosmosdal substation in Centurion.
The substation was launched by Tshwane mayor Randall Williams, utilities and regional operations MMC Daryl Johnston and economic development and spatial planning MMC André le Roux.
Williams said the substation’s capacity has been upgraded from 20MVA to 40MVA at a cost of R65-million.
“The project was triggered by a 20MVA new bulk electricity application from the private developer, Growthpoint Property Group, for their proposed data centre development in the area,” he said.
“Working together, the metro began the work to upgrade the substation in February last year until the completion of the project on July 12, 2022.”
The project scope of work included the following:
– The construction of the substation building to accommodate two stages of 11kV switchgear panels and new 132kV control and protection panels as well as related auxiliary equipment.
– The replacement and installation of new single cables between the power transformers and 11kV transformer incomer panels.
– The replacement of all multicore control cables.
– The replacement of all indoor electrical equipment, including the supply, installation and testing of twenty 11kV switchgear panels, 132kV control and protection panels and batteries and battery chargers.
Williams added that the substation upgrade will allow for the development of the data centre as well as create economic growth and job opportunities in the area.
“Our multiparty administration under my leadership is committed to maintaining and refurbishing all critical infrastructure,” Williams said.
“Last month, we handed over the R96-million fully upgraded Bronkhorstspruit substation.”
He added that the metro will soon conclude upgrades at the Soshanguve substation.
