Winterveld family of 22 receives new home
The shack the family previously lived in, was subjected to heavy rains, unsavoury health conditions, and lack of food as well as other natural and social ills.
Local charitable foundations and the metro recently collaborated to provide a home to a Winterveld family of 22 in dire straits.
The Mgomeni family lived in a dilapidated, informal dwelling and was plagued by a lack of optimism over their situation before being assisted by the Collen Mashawana Foundation, Mampeule Foundation and the Department of Social Services.
Since no one in the large family was working, the Mgomenis depended on social grants to get by and feed their nine children and seven grandchildren. The shack was suffered under heavy rains, and the family unsavoury health conditions, lack and other natural and social ills. This made the environment hazardous for human development.

The Mgomeni family’s financial circumstances were so bleak that none of the children had access to education.
The Mampeule Foundation was founded by Harvard graduate and businessman, Rali Mampeule, and businesswoman Makentse Mampeule. The foundation specialises in presenting opportunities to and improving the quality of life for destitute South Africans. This is their first collaboration with the Collen Mashawana Foundation.
“A house becomes a home when it’s a haven for love, good memories and happiness. As the Mampeule Foundation we wish this house will become a home where the family feels safe and can build good memories,” continued Mampeule.

The founder of Collen Mashawana Foundation Collen Mashawana expressed in a social media post also, the content felt by the parties involved when Mgomeni’s received the keys to their new abode last month.
“I truly believe the first step to ending this family’s struggles is through instilling hope and dignity,” said Mashawana.
The official handover ceremony was done in late August of this year and was attended by both foundations as well as the Minister of Social Development, Lindiwe Zulu and MMC of Housing and Human Settlements, Abel Tau.
“It only takes one brick and one family at a time to make a difference. Now this family has a place to call home,” concluded Mashawana.
