Pretoria West SAPS in surprise school search

The search took place during the early hours of September.

The Pretoria West SAPS conducted a surprise search operation at Lotus secondary school last week as part of a school outreach.

The police were joined by their visible police (Vispol) commander, CPF executives including chairperson Jabu Nkosi, community patrollers, and a Department of Education’s district coordinator.

The operation comes after teachers expressed concerns over the students’ increasing disregard for school rules. An awareness campaign was done at the school before the search to remind the learners to adhere to the rules and caution them about the zero-tolerance policy to drugs and weapons brought to school.

All grades, except for the matrics were searched by authorities. The Grade 12s were spared because they are writing exams.

No contraband was uncovered during the search however the West SAPS believe the operation was a success regardless.

After the search, Pretoria West SAPS and partners talked to learners.

The police emphasised the importance of focusing on schoolwork and avoiding bad company and criminal activities.

Pretoria West SAPS communications officer, Constable Sibongile Vuma reassured the public that the West SAPS’ undying commitment to ensuring learners have a safe environment will remain a priority.

“As the Pretoria West SAPS, we strive to ensure a safe and secure environment for all people living in South Africa, which involves the learners… no learner’s life should be put in danger due to others carrying drugs and dangerous weapons to school,” said Vuma.

Pretoria West SAPS aim to continue conducting these random searches in different schools around the area to keep learners on their toes and deter them from engaging in illicit activities.
