Two arrested on Pretoria freeway with dagga worth thousands
The police arrested the two men travelling from Nelspruit to Atteridgeville with eleven black bags of dagga.
Two men were arrested when they were caught with a large quantity of dagga on the N4 highway east of Pretoria on Monday.
Police spokesperson Constable Munyadziwa Ramovha said police were tipped off that a Toyota Corolla on the N4 freeway was transporting thousands of rands worth of dagga from Nelspruit to Pretoria.
“Just after the R25 off-ramp, the vehicle was spotted with its boot slightly open.
“The police then pulled the vehicle over to search it.
“Eleven black plastic bags dagga of different sizes were found in the vehicle,” Ramovha said.
When the suspects were asked about the dagga, Ramovha said the suspects told police they were taking it to Atteridgeville.
“Both were arrested and the vehicle was impounded.”
The duo is expected to appear in the Bronkhorstspruit magistrate’s court this week.
Ramovha also urged parents to note that dagga was being sold to learners.
“Children are baking space cookies that contain dagga and some are buying space cookies and even taking them to school.
“We would like to issue a stern warning to the learners that take drugs to school that this would land them in trouble with the law,” she said.
In 2018, the Constitutional Court ruled that the use or possession of dagga by an adult for their personal consumption in private was legal.
It said the cultivation of cannabis by an adult in a private place for their own consumption was also legal.
It also held that the use or possession of cannabis by a child anywhere or an adult in public was still illegal. The court suspended this ruling to give parliament time to amend the laws. Parliament is still mulling this.
