Serial house robbers sentenced to 26 years collectively

Two men were sentenced to 26 years imprisonment collectively for housebreaking and illegal immigration at the Pretoria North magistrate’s court on September 16.

Azara Josea Nyungele (36), from Mozambique and Tatenda Tupudza (22), from Zimbabwe were arrested by the Sinoville police with the assistance of the Sinoville CPF after breaking into a house in Annlin, Sinoville on January 27.

“Nyungele was given 20 years imprisonment, while Tupudza was given six years, and they were declared unfit to possess a firearm.

“This is after Nyungele, was found guilty of 11 counts of housebreaking and being illegally in the country, while Tupudza was found guilty of one count of housebreaking and illegal immigration,” said NPA regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said the dedicated investigation by Warrant Officer Riaan Kruger presented evidence to the court that linked the suspects to other housebreaking cases.

“The offences happened between May 2019 and January 2022, when they broke into complainants’ households while sleeping and took luxury items,” said Mahanjana.

“In court, they pleaded guilty to the charges against them, and in their statement, they told the court that they stole these items to sell them. In aggravation, prosecutor Rabia Ebrahim told the court that such crimes are prevalent in the court’s area of jurisdiction.

“Each count of housebreaking involved luxury items, with a total loss of over R10 000. Furthermore, there was no justification for the reasons provided for offences committed,” Ebrahim said.
