Aerospace lovers were treated to amazing stunts

People from different provinces of South Africa converged at the Waterkloof air force base in Centurion on Saturday for the African aerospace and defence (AAD) expo.

The expo kicked off with a demonstration by the police and SA defence national force (SANDF) showcasing their skills in dealing with hostage-taking.

The Tshwane metro police (TMPD) closed off several roads over the weekend because of the expo, which combines both a trade exhibition and an air show, and returns after a long break as a result of the Covid-19 restrictions.

This year’s event, which officially opened on Wednesday, 21 September 2022, attracted exhibitors from all continents showcasing their brands like the latest firearms, helicopters and armoured vehicles.

However, during the show, a member of the SANDF sustained head injuries while practising for the expo on Thursday.

SANDF communications head Siphiwe Dlamini said the member was performing an aerobics manoeuvre for the expo when he fell, seemingly from a plane overhead.

“The member was immediately airlifted to Montana hospital for assessment by neurologists.”

The expo is Africa’s only aerospace and defence trade exhibition and an air show.

Tshwane metro mayor Randall Williams attended the official opening alongside the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Thandi Modise on September 21.

“The metro is a proud host of this event, making our municipality a strategic partner contributing to the expo’s success.

“We encourage all residents, young and old, to attend the event as this has a positive economic impact and offers job and business opportunities to our residents.

“International exhibitors from around the globe have already arrived and we expect this to translate into good business for our local hospitality sector. Despite the challenges posed by the current high levels of load-shedding, we believe that this event is a great opportunity to demonstrate to the rest of the world that Tshwane is a great host metro with much to offer.”
