Premier Makhura impressed by ‘solar train school’
The school recently made local news headlines for producing a fully functional solar-powered train.
Industries should work with schools such as the Soshanguve Automotive School of Specialisation (SOS) to get the best talented young people, Gauteng Premier David Makhura said.
Makhura and MEC of Education Panyaza Lesufi visited the school, which recently made local news headlines for producing a fully functional solar-powered train, on Thursday.
“The students here are not only solving a climate crisis change issue, but they’re solving a mobility issue,” said Makhura of the train.
“Africa is rich with natural resources but I don’t want to give these raw materials to the world. Instead, I want to see South Africa producing our own cars and trains through young people like these.
“We must properly prepare these young people. We need schools that get them to understand that Europe, Asia and America shouldn’t be coming here to get raw materials and use them and come back and sell to us at unaffordable prices,” he said.
He added that the dream is to have a South African car made by young people in partnership with big brands.
“Investment in our youth and innovation is very important,” he said.

He said it was a great inspiration for him to see what young people can do when given the opportunity.
“Our province’s future is in good hands with the youth and leaders like Lesufi to inspire them. These projects must succeed and jobs must be created so that young people can become entrepreneurs,” he said.
He added that they’re not training young people to work for anyone but to produce in the township.
Lesufi said the young learners have proven a point of what they can do after getting an option.
“I’m proud of them and the leadership of the school,” he said.
