Youth invited to health expo in Atteridgeville

The Tshwane metro health department has called on all young citizens to take part in a youth and adolescent educational health programme in Atteridgeville this Friday, September 30.
The programme is scheduled for the Atteridgeville community hall from 10:00-14:00 and offers the youth access to a range of healthcare services being showcased.
Health MMC Rina Marx said that the purpose of the programme is to create awareness of the variety of healthcare services the metro offers to the young in their areas.
“The services include health information on drug and substance abuse response, HIV/AIDS awareness, reproductive health, tuberculosis screening, breast examinations, referrals and childhood cancer awareness,” said Marx.
The MMC promised that the day will be both fun and informative.
In addition to the health screenings, other youth-related topics and issues will be discussed and young people can find out ways to better tackle the ills facing their demographic.
Quizzes and games are to take place that will challenge the young minds on youth-related topics.
Free lessons on how to properly construct a CV are also offered as well as information on pet care including where to take a pet for sterilisation.
“The health department holds the view that increasing the knowledge among the youth can contribute greatly to ensuring positive health outcomes,” said Marx
The programme is reported to be a multidisciplinary one where attendees can consult with professionals specialising in fields such as oral health as well as occupational therapy and podiatry.
Marx states that South Africans under 19 years of age make up 22.12 million of its 60.6 million citizens, hence initiatives such as these.
“I would like to encourage the youth to make use of this opportunity. This initiative forms part of the responsibilities of the health department, which include providing primary healthcare services as well as municipal and environmental health services,” concluded Marx.
