Mamelodi residents celebrate Heritage month
Senior citizens and the police celebrate Heritage month.
Mamelodi West police celebrated their cultural diversity on September 23 to commemorate Heritage month.
Members of the different police units organised themselves into groups and dressed up as Tsongas, Tswanas, Pedis, Ndebeles, Swatis, Vendas and Afrikaners.
Spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso said this exercise was not only entertainment but also a public relations exercise to unite the staff and embrace different cultures.
He said members had a lot of fun on the day singing in different languages and learning how to cook different traditional foods from each other.
Acting station commander Colonel Simon Matome Makgopa said the management supports the event as it promotes diversity among the members.
In another event, residents of Rethabile service centre for elderly people celebrated Heritage month at Rethabile community hall on September 28.
They came dressed up in their different cultures and displaced some of the cultural handiwork they made.

Kate Kekana of the centre said as part of celebrating Heritage month the elderly wore traditional attire and brought some traditional food they cooked to share, to embrace other cultures and traditions.
“The elderly celebrated the day by singing and dancing which is part of exercising that slows ageing, promotes good health and mental vitality,” she said.
The centre, founded by Rossina Ratlhlogo and retired teachers and nurses, has been keeping the elderly in the area busy for more than 20 years.
